    WRITER/EDITOR

    USCG Headquarters, Washington, DC

    Ability to obtain CAC card 

     

    Provide communication planning, technical writing and editorial services; graphic support; website publishing and content management; event planning, as well as limited technical, administrative, and analytic support for the United States Coast Guard.

     

    Job Description

    • Provides research, analysis, writing, editing, proofreading, design, layout, and related production work for assigned communication products
    • Assists with drafting speeches, briefings or talking points a minimum of five (5) times per month by interacting with USCG personnel, including Executive and Senior Leadership
    • Assists with writing, editing, and proofreading fact sheets, media advisories, acquisition updates, white papers, and other written materials for audiences
    • Writes, edits, and proofreads unique news or feature articles each month for publications or websites, including blogs and newsletters
    • Submits monthly recommendations for article topics for CG-9 publications, the CG-9 website, CG-9 input to the USCG blog, and the monthly CG-9 internal newsletter
    • Develops unique graphics and illustrations for communication products
    • Maintains graphics and image libraries
    • With instructions, develops branded communication tools and maintains standard templates for communication products

    Experience and Qualifications

     

    Required:

    • BA/BS in English, Journalism, or a related field and between three and 10 years of relevant experience providing writing support in the form of research, analysis, writing, editing, proofreading, design, layout, and related production work for assigned communication products
    • BA/BS degree may be substituted for MA/MS and one to eight years of experience; AA/AS degree and six to 13 years of experience; or no degree and nine to 16 years of experience
    • Experience in drafting speeches, briefings, or talking points for personnel in senior leadership roles
    • Experience in writing, editing, and proofreading fact sheets, media advisories, acquisition updates, white papers and other written materials
    • Demonstrated experience in writing, editing, and proofreading news or feature articles for publications and websites
    • Able to provides written products that are grammatically correct, factually accurate and up-to-date, and consistent with Government plain language standards
    • Experience with using Associated Press Stylebook (AP) standards

    Desired:

    • Familiarity or experience using Coast Guard Correspondence Manual and Coast Guard Stylebook standards
    • Excellent oral and writing communication skills
    • Proficient in MS Office applications (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
